What is Polygon (MATIC)?
Polygon (formerly Matic Network) is the first well-structured, easy-to-use platform for scaling and infrastructure development for Ethereum. Polygon SDK is its core component, a modular, flexible framework that can be used to build multiple types of applications.
Using Polygon, developers can create optimistic rollup chains, ZK rollup chains, stand-alone chains, or any other type of infrastructure they require.
By using Polygon, Ethereum is effectively transformed into a full-featured multi-chain system (aka the Internet of Blockchains). The system is similar to those offered by Polkadot, Cosmos, Avalanche, etc., with the benefits of Ethereum's openness, security, and vibrant ecosystem.
During the lifetime of the system, the $MATIC token will be increasingly important for both securing it and enabling it for governance.
Polygon combines the Plasma Framework and the proof-of-stake blockchain architecture. Plasma, the smart contract framework proposed by Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum, enables the issuance of scalable and autonomous smart contracts.
Polygon's native token, MATIC, is an ERC-20 token running on the Ethereum blockchain. For use within the Polygon ecosystem, the tokens can be used both for payment services and as settlement currency. MATIC tokens are also used to pay the transaction fees for Polygon sidechains.
